The François Bertheau Estate is located on the picturesque hill of Côte de Nuits in France, at the heart of the famous Burgundy vineyards. Established around the ancient Meuil abbey in 1768, the estate boasts over 11.5 hectares of vines, of which 12 are grand crus and 13 are premier crus planted. The Bertheau family has headed the estate since its foundation, and seven generations have succeeded at the helm of the operation. The estate has brought fame and reputation to the wines of Côte de Nuits and Burgundy for generations. The vineyards benefit from limestone, medium limestone, and marl soils, conducive to the production of fine and subtle wines. This variety of terrain guarantees wines rich in aromas and flavors, especially in the grand crus such as Clos Vougeot, Corton Pougets, and Corton Grèves. Despite numerous changes, François Bertheau Estate remains faithful to tradition and ensures that all grapes are hand-harvested, with traditional and eco-friendly winemaking methods. Furthermore, the estate strives to keep part of its lands unplowed and has planted plants and flowers to increase biodiversity and ensure the protection of the many bird and butterfly species that reside there. The wines bottled under the François Bertheau label bear the seal of Burgundy's finesse and elegance. The estate's wines are recognized for their tannic softness and their peppery and fruity tones, all complemented by notes of light aging in oak barrels.

Discovering the wine region of Côte de Nuits

The Côte de Nuits is the northern half of the Côte d'Or wine region in Burgundy (the Southern half being the Côte de Beaune). It specializes in red wines made from Pinot noir grapes, the most famous and expensive of which come from the grand crus of Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny. About 95% of all wines produced in the Côte de Nuits are made from a single grape variety: Pinot Noir. The district is widely regarded as the spiritual home of Pinot Noir, a reputation strongly reinforced by such high quality wines as the Grand Cru Romanée-Conti.

The remaining 5% of Côte de Nuits wines are white, made from Burgundy's other star grape, Chardonnay. The district is not known for its white wines - the Côte de Beaune is the white wine mecca of Burgundy - but the few wines that are produced there are generally of very high quality. The finest are produced under the Vougeot Premier Cru appellation, but a small number come from the Musigny Grand Cru Vineyard. While the Côte de Beaune, to the south, is larger and more prolific, the Côte de Nuits favours quality over quantity.

It is home to some of the world's finest red wine vineyards and includes 24 of Burgundy's 33 Grand Crus. The main town is Nuits-Saint-Georges, known as Nuits until it adopted the name of its most favoured vineyard, Les Saint-Georges, in the late 19th century. Although located at the southern end of the coast, Nuits-Saint-Georges is less than 16 km from the northernmost vineyard of the Côte de Nuits, at Marsannay, which demonstrates the small Size of the area in question. Tracing the limestone spine of the Côte d'Or escarpment, the Côte de Nuits is Long and thin, measuring only 24 km from end to end and 3.

Discover the grape variety: Ciliegiolo

It is believed to be of Spanish origin. Today it is very present in Tuscany and in many other Italian regions where it is often blended with sangiovese to produce the famous Chianti. According to recent genetic analysis, it is the father of the said sangiovese, its mother being an almost unknown variety called calabrese di Montenuovo. - Synonymy: ciliegino, ciregiuolo or cireguoli, aleatico di spagna (for all the synonyms of the grape varieties, click here!). - Description: medium to large bunches, cylindrical-conical, winged, compact, strong medium-sized stalks with very little lignification; medium-sized, round berries, skin of medium thickness, very bluish-black with sometimes purplish reflections, juicy pulp. - Production potential: buds early in the year, only a few days after Chasselas. It is particularly fond of not too poor hillside soils. Vigorous, productive and regular, it should however be pruned in relation to the fact that its base eyes are not very fertile. Sensitive to wind, mildew, powdery mildew, acid rot and grey rot. Resistant to drought. Ripening 2nd period late. - Wine type/flavours: gives a full and supple wine with soft tannins, rich in alcohol, of a more or less dark ruby colour with in some cases purplish tints. Aromas of cinnamon, cherry, blueberry, spicy notes, plum, fresh grapes, liquorice, tobacco, vanilla, ... .
