Emerging region of southern Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), rolling hills at 200-400 m on granite and schist soils, marked diurnal temperature range. Cabernet Sauvignon is the signature red: structured and fresh with blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, pepper and an herbal touch, firm tannins and acidity preserved by altitude. Supple Merlot, dense Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional and robust Tannat complement. Taut Chardonnay and lively Sauvignon Blanc in whites.
The wine region of Rio Grande do Sul
Brazil's winemaking heart (~80% of production), Italian tradition. Recognised specialty: traditional-method sparkling wines (espumantes), fresh and fruity, based on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, among South America's finest. Accessible reds: supple, fruity Merlot (plum, cherry), fleshy Cabernet Sauvignon, dense, tannic Tannat. Round Chardonnay, light Riesling Italico, sweet, floral Moscato whites.
The word of the wine: Second wine
In the Bordeaux vineyard, the second wine is a lesser-aged wine made from the youngest vines, while the main wine of the château is called the "grand vin".
