Discovering the wine region of Zürich

Zurich is a Swiss cantonal wine region covering all winegrowing sub-regions and vineyards within the borders of the Zurich canton. It is one of the more productive cantonal appellations in the German-speaking Northern Part of Switzerland. The main viticultural area here arches to the north, above the city of Winterthur, stretching up to Schaffhausen and even crossing the Rhine briefly around Eglisau, Rafz, Rudlingen, Wil and Huntwagen. This area is generally known as Zurcher Weinland, although as an area it is not precisely demarcated.

To the east is Thurgau, the birthplace of Dr Hermann Müller, so it is perhaps not surprising that his Muller-Thurgau crossing is the most widely planted Grape variety in Zurich vineyards. Here in Switzerland, though, the variety is often still referred to as Riesling-Sylvaner, revealing its genetic identity. As is standard for the northern, German-speaking part of Switzerland, red wines made from Pinot Noir constitute the majority of the region's production. They are not dissimilar in style to those made just to the north across the Rhine, in Germany's most southerly region, Baden.

The Gamay x Reichensteiner crossings Gamaret and Garanoir are also grown here, as are the alliterative trio Dunkelfelder, Dornfelder and Diolinoir. Winterthur is Switzerland's sixth-largest city, but the landscape just to the north is a Dense patchwork of fields and forests. The region is divided by the Thur river, which eventually flows into the Rhine just north of Rudlingen.

Discover the grape variety: Pinot gris

Pinot Gris is a grey grape variety mutated from Pinot Noir. It has its origins in Burgundy, where it is called pinot-beurot in reference to the colour of the grey robes worn by the monks of the region. Established in Alsace since the 17th century, pinot gris was called tokay until 2007. It is made up of bunches of small berries that vary in colour from pink to blue-grey. It is particularly well suited to the continental climate because it is resistant to the cold in winter and to spring frosts. This variety also likes dry limestone soils with plenty of sunshine in the summer. Pinot Gris is well suited to late harvesting or to the selection of noble grapes, depending on the year and the concentration of sugars in the berries. Pinot Gris wines are distinguished by their aromatic complexity of white fruits, mushrooms, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, etc., and their great finesse. In the Loire Valley, pinot gris is used in the Coteaux-d'Ancenis appellations. It gives dry or sweet wines with pear and peach aromas.

Walls: Tasting Hermitage 2001 20 years on

In 2001, George W. Bush was sworn in as the 43rd President of the United States. Meanwhile in the UK, Tony Blair led the Labour Party to its second landslide victory. A lot can change over the course of 20 years. According to many Rhône winemakers and wine collectors, this is how long a bottle of Hermitage should lay undisturbed until you open it. Is it really worth the wait? I recently tasted 11 Hermitage 2001s – seven red, two white, two sweet – to test the 20 year hypothesis and see how these ...

DO Terra Alta makes orange wine official

In the last board meeting of 2021 for the regulatory council of DO Terra Alta, in Catalunya, Spain, a long list of changes was approved. The most prominent was the making of a very strict certification system for wines that are 100% Garnatxa Blanca given that it’s their flagship grape variety. But perhaps the most interesting item is a bit further down the list that allows certification for a type of wines that in Catalan are called “vins brisats”. The name refers to white wine ...

Prices have been rising on California fine wines, and especially Screaming Eagle, said Liv-ex this week. Its California 50 index, which tracks the price performance of Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Dominus, Opus One and Ridge Monte Bello, has increased by around 32% in the last year. ‘High quality and heightened demand have led to rising prices,’ said Liv-ex, a global marketplace for the trade. Its figures provide more evidence of a strong 12 months for the fine wine market in general, and fol ...
