Supple, fragrant reds with fine tannins and vibrant freshness, showing raspberry, violet, green pepper, pencil lead and gentle spice aromas. Star of the Loire as a single variety (Chinon, Bourgueil, Saumur-Champigny) and of the right bank of Bordeaux in blends (Cheval Blanc at 60%). Also in semi-dry Anjou rosés. The wine region of Sebino

Lombardy IGT south of Lake Iseo (Brescia province, immediate neighbour of Franciacorta), glacial morainic hills, stony calcareous soils, temperate climate moderated by the lake. Chardonnay is the signature white — generous and taut with yellow apple, pear, citrus, brioche, hazelnut and mineral notes, often the base for fine sparkling wines. Lively Pinot Bianco and ethereal Pinot Nero as whites. Supple Merlot, firm Cabernet, noble Nebbiolo and vivid Barbera as varietal reds.

The wine region of Lombardia

Three poles. Franciacorta DOCG, Italy's answer to Champagne: elegant brioche traditional-method sparklers (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc), fine bubble and mineral profile. Alpine Valtellina: Nebbiolo (alias Chiavennasca) with fine tannins and red fruits, powerful Sforzato passito. Oltrepò Pavese: fresh Pinot Noir and fruity-sparkling Bonarda.
