Discover the grape variety: Robin noir

Discovered in the 1870s by Mr. Robin, who lived in the Drôme at the time in Lapeyrouse-Mornay, this ancient grape variety is believed to have originated in the north of Isère. It can also be found in Switzerland. According to Thierry Lacombe (I.N.R.A./Montpellier), it is the result of a natural intraspecific crossing between Tressot Noir and Mondeuse Blanche. It should be noted in passing that, on the one hand, it has exactly the same parents as the mondeuse noire, that on the other hand, it is the mother of the diolinoir and, finally, is related to the servanin. Robin noir is not widely propagated today because it is not well known, although it is listed in the Official Catalogue of Wine Grape Varieties, list A1.

The wine region of Ahr

Ahr is one of Germany’s least-known and Northernmost wine regions, known for its Pinot Noir reds. It Lies immediately north of the Mosel, and follows the Ahr River in the Final stages of its journey towards its confluence with the Rhein. One might expect a wine region this far north (50°N) to specialize in white wines – like almost every other cool-Climate wine region. After all, neighboring Mosel and Mittelrhein both clearly favor white wines (around 85 percent).

Rhône 2021: best value wines

Severe frost in early April wreaked havoc across both the northern and southern appellations of the Rhône Valley in 2021, with many producers losing a large majority of their crop. The reds that did materialise tend towards lean, green flavours, because grapes struggled to ripen. A few producers struck lucky, with late-budding varieties or pockets of vineyard less affected by frost. But overall, it is the whites that really shine, showing freshness, precision and longevity. St-Joseph, Vacqueyras ...

Walls: Discovering St-Joseph estate Martine & Christian Rouchier

A couple of weeks ago, I was looking up at some terraced vineyards in St-Joseph with an Australian friend. He remarked that he’d never seen a steep vineyard like this in his home country. Who could afford to rip out the trees, build the access roads, construct the terraces, and plant the vines, without being certain beforehand that the resulting wine could be sold at prices high enough to recoup the investment? It might not be the most romantic way of looking at it. But that’s the modern reality ...

QUICK LINK: Napa Cabernet 2020: full vintage report and top-scoring wines As Coombsville, east of the town of Napa, is among the coolest of the Valley’s 16 sub-AVAs, the region benefited from the intense heat of 2020 that plagued sites up-valley. Andy Erickson of Favia Erickson Winegrowers reminds us that in 2017, the fires ‘surrounded us and were later, and the last of the grapes that hadn’t come in we didn’t harvest. But in 2020, we decided to learn something and made all our wines.’ He said t ...
