Star of the great northern Rhône reds (Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas, Saint-Joseph) and pillar of GSM blends in the south (Châteauneuf-du-Pape). Widely exported to Australia as Shiraz (Barossa, McLaren Vale). Cross of dureza × mondeuse blanche.

Southernmost Grand Cru of Alsace (Thann-Vieux Thann, Haut-Rhin, 21. 96 ha at 350-450 m, full south-facing on unique Alsace volcanic soils — Carboniferous basalt, schist and granite, warm heat-absorbing soil): Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer signature whites (~35% each) — dark, full-bodied profiles with notes of smoke, minerals, grilled figs, tobacco, sometimes petrol.
