Extreme northwest mountain AVA of Sonoma above Lake Sonoma (AVA 2002, 160 acres) at minimum 800 ft elevation: Zinfandel is the signature red king — concentrated with deep dark fruit intensity, peppery spices, mineral salinity and high acidity distinct from valley-floor Zins. Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

A term that can have several meanings, but often designates a branded wine as opposed to a wine from a vineyard or château, sometimes abused to designate regional appellations (e.g. Bordeaux, Burgundy, etc.).
