Discovering the wine region of Rüdesheim

Rüdesheim is a town on the northern banks of the Rhine river in the German wine region of Rheingau. It has a number of notable Vineyard sites planted mainly to Riesling. Seven of these are classified by the VDP as Grosse Lage: Rosengarten, Kirchenpfad, Unterer Bischofsberg, Berg Rottland, Berg Roseneck, Berg Kaisersteinfels and Berg Schlossberg. Someof these are on the south-facing slopes above the town.

The most highly regarded sites are on the banks above the Rhine river, to the west of the town itself. The vineyards above the town, including Kirchenpfad and Bischofsberg, are planted on sedimentary soils that have better water retention than the rockier sites to the west. These vineyards are protected from the cold northern winds by the surrounding hills, and are instead in the path of an easterly breeze that restrains the typical morning mist and keeps the vines Dry. The steepest section of the Rheingau is just west of Rüdesheim.

Here, the Berd Rottland, Berg Roseneck and Berg Schlossberg vineyards make some of the most prized wines in the Rheingau on vineyards that have gradients reaching as high as 70 percent. The change in soil types is pronounced, with slate, quartzite and gravel dominating a little scattered loess near the surface. Riesling reaches great maturity in these vineyards due to the close proximity to the Rhine and the quartzite soils retaining heat throughout the evening. The area was first settled by Celts, followed by the Romans in the 1st century, who brought with them their wine-making knowledge.

Aldo Fiordelli: ‘The east-facing vineyard absorbs the morning’s first sunlight’

I’m fortunate enough to taste a fair amount of fine wine each year and I have come to the conclusion that each of us is forced to build our own stylistic preferences, regardless of the appellation or classification of a wine. Instead of simply choosing a bottle of Bordeaux over Barolo, for example, most of us probably aim to drink each on the right occasion and, in doing so, carve out our individual preferences for these wines. My personal bias – which I must confess, to be fair and transp ...

Glenfiddich owners launch House of Hazelwood collection of rare Scotch whiskies

The new range, drawn from whisky stocks laid down by the Gordons for almost a century and named after the family home in Dufftown, comprises The Charles Gordon Collection – in 2022, four whiskies priced at £3,000-4,500 per bottle – and The Legacy Collection – four whiskies priced at £950-1,450. They include the first spirit produced at the Girvan grain distillery in South Ayrshire in 1964, and a 56-year-old whisky, unusually blended as new make spirit before its maturation. ‘This is a collection ...

’Low and no’ drinks trend gathers pace, says UK survey

Low and no alcohol drinks are becoming increasingly popular in the UK, according to a new YouGov survey commissioned by The Portman Group, the industry self-regulatory body. Nearly one third of respondents said they chose low or no alcohol drinks on a ‘semi-regular’ basis, up from one in four in a similar survey a year earlier. Its results fit with analysis that consumer demand for ‘low and no’ drinks is growing strongly in several developed countries. Portman Group and YouGov define ...
