Discovering the wine region of Valence

Valencia is a province in the centre of Spain's sunny east coast, perhaps better known for its oranges (and paella) than its wine. The administrative Center of Valencia is the city of the same name, the third largest in Spain and the largest port on the Mediterranean. Archaeological evidence suggests that wine making in Valencia dates back more than a thousand years, but the region has never been particularly prominent on the world wine map. In modern times, Valencia's wine production has focused on quantity rather than quality, although this is gradually changing.

In addition to the DO Valencia title, this province is also home to the Denominación de Origen Utiel-Requena. The laws relating to DO Valencia are overseen by the local Consejo Regulador (wine authority), established in 1957. The Valencia DO wine title covers 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres), unevenly divided between two distinct geographical areas. The smaller area, Clarino, is about 65 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of the city of Valencia, bordering the northern boundary of the Alicante DO area.

Its figures provide more evidence of a strong 12 months for the fine wine market in general, and fol ...

Alsace’s Domaine Zind-Humbrecht: 2019 releases tasted

It is always reassuring to find flourishing examples of family continuity in French wine estates. At the famous Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace, Pierre-Emile Humbrecht is the latest to join the family business. In preparation, he studied at the Changins School of Viticulture and Enology in Switzerland and then completed internships at wine estates, beginning with Thérèse Chappaz in that same country for 18 months, followed by a six-month period at Domaine Tissot in the Jura and then nearly eigh ...

Port producer proposes new classification for ‘young harvest’ releases

Albino Jorge Sousa, owner of Port estate Quinta da Boeira, said his proposal for a new classification called ‘Full Body-Young Harvest’ Ports would inject cashflow earlier for Port producers. Jorge Sousa urged the Port sector to ‘wake up’ to meet what he said was growing demand for younger Ports from wine buyers and importers over the past two years. His proposal comes amid wider efforts to help reinvigorate the Port category. This year, Portugal’s Port and Douro Wine Institute, the I ...
