The wine region of Piekenierskloof
High-altitude ward (650–750 m) south of Olifants River in the Cederberg (South Africa), nicknamed the Cape's "Grenache HQ": highest concentration of old unirrigated own-rooted Grenache in South Africa (plantings from 1973). Signature Grenache is fragrant and mineral, Shiraz is savoury, with Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinotage as complements. Sandy-loam soils on east-west slopes, cool nights and warm days — slow ripening, low pH, intense colour and complex aromas.
The wine region of Western Cape
Cradle of South African wine. Signature Chenin Blanc (Steen, 20%) in ample, fresh whites with notes of quince, yellow apple, honey and acacia flower, from crisp dry to sweet. Sharp, iodised Sauvignon Blanc (Walker Bay, Constantia), balanced Chardonnay. Reds: emblematic Pinotage with roasted aromas (coffee, plum, smoke), firm Cabernet Sauvignon, spicy Syrah.
The word of the wine: Perlant
Said of a slightly effervescent wine.
