The wine region of Minas Gerais
Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth-largest in the world. It has a sizable wine industry, but is probably best known in global markets for spirits, and in particular Cachaça. With roughly 83,000 hectares (205,000 acres) of Vineyard">Vineyard, it ranks just behind its near-neighbors Argentina and Chile in terms of acreage under vine. The word of the wine: Chaptalization
The addition of sugar at the time of fermentation of the must, an ancient practice, but theorized by Jean-Antoine Chaptal at the dawn of the 19th century. The sugar is transformed into alcohol and allows the natural degree of the wine to be raised in a weak or cold year, or - more questionably - when the winegrower has a harvest that is too large to obtain good maturity.
