The wine region of Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
Ward of Walker Bay (Western Cape, South Africa) — the highest-altitude appellation (>15 km from the coast) of the Hemel-en-Aarde complex: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Burgundian style among ~20 focused producers. Ancient soils of decomposed granite over rocky clays — a rare geological feature within greater Walker Bay clearly distinguishing it from the lower valley. Cool climate influenced by the cold Benguela current at 34°S, slow ripening.
The wine region of Western Cape
Cradle of South African wine. Signature Chenin Blanc (Steen, 20%) in ample, fresh whites with notes of quince, yellow apple, honey and acacia flower, from crisp dry to sweet. Sharp, iodised Sauvignon Blanc (Walker Bay, Constantia), balanced Chardonnay. Reds: emblematic Pinotage with roasted aromas (coffee, plum, smoke), firm Cabernet Sauvignon, spicy Syrah.
The word of the wine: Decanter
1) Glass container with a narrow neck used to aerate or decant the wine. 2) Decanter wines: wines that are drunk young and that were once drawn directly from the barrel. For example, some Muscadets or Beaujolais.
