The wine region of Zellertal
Historic valley straddling Rheinhessen and northern Pfalz (boundary since the Congress of Vienna 1816, ~100 ha, unique Muschelkalk limestone). Riesling is the absolute signature: mineral and taut with intense citrus, peach, white flowers, flint and a characteristic saline-calcareous edge of the shell limestone. Grand cru Schwarzer Herrgott is the pinnacle (full south aspect). Battenfeld-Spanier, Schwedhelm and Wick are the references.
The wine region of Pfalz
Fleshy, dry, fruity Riesling is the region's signature: yellow peach, apricot, ripe citrus, lovely mineral tension. Germany's largest red-wine area (40%), with silky Spätburgunder showing red fruit and spice, darker structured Dornfelder, supple Portugieser. Some rounded Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. A 23,640 ha vineyard along the Haardt, among Germany's warmest (>2,000 h of sun).
The word of the wine: Cinsault
Cinsault is a southern black grape variety that can be found in the blends of most Mediterranean appellations, but most often as an accessory grape variety. It is undoubtedly most present in certain rosé wines (in Corbières, Côtes-de-Provence, etc.): it gives these wines highly appreciated aromas of strawberry, peach and raspberry. In vin de pays (IGP), it is often vinified on its own, usually as a rosé.
