Discovering the wine region of Mount Lofty Ranges

The Mount Lofty Ranges is a wine zone in SouthAustralia encompassing the wine regions of Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and Adelaide Plains. It is named after the range of mountains to the east of the city of Adelaide. In line with South Australia's other winegrowing areas, conditions within the zone are strongly influenced by variations in topography, including altitude, proximity to the coast and a wide array of soil types. As a result, the three Mount Lofty regions have different climatic and grape-growing conditions.

For example, the Adelaide Hills region has a distinctly cool Climate, which assists in the production of varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. It also specializes in Sparkling wines. By contrast, Adelaide Plains is very Warm, due to a lack of elevation, and mostly produces red wines. Clare Valley's wine production is ruled by its continental climate.

The Mount Lofty Ranges zone borders the Barossa Valley on three sides, but the Barossa and Eden Valleys fall within the Barossa Zone.

Discover the grape variety: Tourbat

The Tourbat grape variety is found particularly in Sardinia. It is probably of Catalan origin and is grown on an area of 25 hectares. It is also known by other names such as torbato, caninu or malvoise du Roussillon, and develops perfectly in hot, dry soil. It is noticeable for its drooping habit. Its lobed leaves have short teeth. The bunches, sometimes winged, are of medium size. They can weigh up to 347 gr. The berries, a little ellipsoid, are rather of a medium size. The flesh is juicy and covered with a rather thick skin, which takes on an amber-pink colour when they are ripe. A wine of medium acidity and high quality comes from this variety. When young, the wine gives off an aroma of ripe apples and when aged, it gives off a scent of honey and cooked fruits.

Study reveals glimpse of ancient Roman winemaking

Jars recovered from the seabed and dating back to the Roman period have offered more clues about winemaking and storage in this era, according to a study that used a mixture of analysis techniques. A combination of chemical markers, plant tissue residue and pollen analysis helped researchers to build a picture about the possible contents of three amphorae ‘wine jars’ discovered near the coastal town of San Felice Circeo, around 90km south-east of Rome. ‘The evidence suggests the amphorae were us ...

Bordeaux innovators: Meet the names to know

When I first visited Bordeaux, the sleepy landscape of turreted stone châteaux and vineyards seemed timeless, with traditions so well established you felt they would go on forever. But new energy in this famous wine region is visible and audible: bees buzz and sheep graze in organic vineyards; brand-new cellars brim with sustainable features and wine fermenting in trendy amphorae; unusual grapes are gaining attention; and the number of women in key roles keeps growing. Yoga among the vines is s ...
