Discover the grape variety: Meslier Saint-François

Meslier Saint François is a French grape variety that comes from the Gatinais, located south of the Paris basin. It was obtained from a cross between Chenin and Gouais Blanc. It is planted on a surface area of 50 ha in France and is often confused with Arbois, hence the synonym it shares with the latter, Orbois. Its berries and clusters are of normal size. Its adult leaves have convex teeth. Meslier Saint François is not very vigorous, but it remains fertile. It buds early, 3 days before Chasselas. It is often exposed to spring frosts and is susceptible to oidium and grey rot. Meslier Saint François produces flat, light wines with little alcohol. When distilled, its eaux de vie are full of bouquet and fine. It can thus be used in the blending of grape varieties that produce cognac or armagnac.

Most Vitis species cannot survive in these conditions, with the notable exception of Vitis riparia. In South Dakota, Frontenac, Concord, St.

Andrew Jefford: ‘A wine’s visual cues shout, stamp, whistle and roar’

Disconcerting: I couldn’t forget this bottle for days afterwards. Still can’t. Back in August, wine critic Lin Liu MW (together with her partner Philippe Lejeune of Château de Chambert in Cahors) came to dinner, en route to a short holiday in Provence. One of the bottles Lin brought for us to try together was the 2018 Les Rocheuses, Parcelles No 5 et 6, from Château Le Rey in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. It came in a slope-shouldered bottle, not a classic Bordeaux bottle. We tried it with some R ...

In brief: Rhône 2020 En Primeur Northern Rhône 2020: 4.5/5 A reliably fresh, balanced and approachable vintage – a return to classicism after a series of powerful years. Excellent white wines. Southern Rhône: 4/5 Fresh, juicy and immediate reds with lower alcohol than recent years, though some lack concentration. Beautiful white wines. ‘These are wines that will provide huge amounts of pleasure, straight out of the gate. It is that rare thing – an excellent vintage for early drinking.̵ ...

A new level of identity for Canary Island wines

“Origen 1989” by Bodega el Lomo is a wine made from the certified parcel of, “Los Laureles”, a 12ha vineyard at 600m of altitude that holds centenary bush vines. It’s the first wine certified under this new system, having just arrived to market this month with others to come in the near future. While the DO Islas Canarias covers the entire territory of these eight Spanish islands off the western coast of Africa, there are 10 other DOs that govern the wines of certai ...
