The wine region of Serres
Greek PGI in central Macedonia north of Thessaloniki, temperate continental terroir at the foot of the mountains. Assyrtiko is the signature white: taut and mineral with lively citrus, green apple, white flowers and a saline hint. Aromatic Malagouzia with stone fruit and a tropical touch. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as Bordeaux-style signature reds with blackcurrant, black cherry and a herbaceous hint, balanced tannins.
The wine region of Macedonia
Large wine region of northern Greece, 1st by volume, altitude vineyards tempered by mountain massifs. Signature Xinomavro ("acid black") as king grape: structured, complex reds with signature notes of tart cherry, dried tomato, black olive, Mediterranean herbs, leather and a mineral touch, firm tannins and long ageing — compared to Nebbiolo. Stars in PDO Naoussa, Amyndeon, Goumenissa and Rapsani. Also lively, mineral Assyrtiko, aromatic Malagousia as whites.
The word of the wine: Metis (grape variety)
A grape variety resulting from the crossing of two varieties of the same species. For example, pinotage (a South African grape variety) is the result of crossing pinot noir and cinsault.
