Discovering the wine region of Basilicate

Basilicata, in Southern Italy, is a region whose name rarely appears in wine circles. It is best known for its red wines made from the Aglianico grape, and in particular for the Aglianico del Vulture appellation. It has only four DOCs, which collectively cover only two of every 100 bottles produced here. The remaining 98% is sold under IGT or, more likely, Vino da Tavola.

Compared to other Italian wine regions, total wine production in this region is very low: less than 50 million liters. Basilicata may not be a particularly Rich region, but it is rich in natural beauty. Its 10,000 square kilometers (3,860 square miles) of land are bordered to the North by Campania and Puglia and to the south by Calabria. Mostly landlocked, with the Ionian Sea on one side and the Tyrrhenian Sea on the other, it has beautiful mountain ranges and hills.

Abadía Retuerta, Spain’s newest Vino de Pago

For those unfamiliar with the Vino de Pago qualification, it was created in Spain in 2003 to certify singular estates (pagos) as Protected Denominations of Origin. While not a requisite, it’s generally implemented by individual wineries looking to gain protected status for a single vineyard site within their domain. This is the case for Abadía Retuerta which is an estate of 700ha, of which 180ha is planted to vine. While located within the Duero Valley, the site resides within the borders of Sar ...

EPI purchases Super Tuscan producer Isole e Olena

The De Marchi family established the 56ha estate back in 1956, and it is now firmly established as one of the region’s leading producers. Isole e Olena played a key role in reviving the quality of Chianti in the 1970s, and its flagship wine – Cepparello, a barrique-aged Sangiovese from old vines – is regarded as one of the original Super Tuscans. A Piedmont lawyer called Francesco De Marchi founded the business, but his visionary son – Paulo De Marchi – has driven its rise to prominence. He is r ...
