The wine region of Barossa

Barossa is one of the six wine-producing zones of SouthAustralia, and arguably the most recognized name in the Australian wine industry. Barossa wines have attracted more international awards than any other region in the country. It is divided into two sections: the western Barossa Valley (effectively the Warmer valley floor) and on the eastern side the cooler, higher altitude Eden Valley, both of which have a distinct Geographical Indication (GI) formalized in 1997. Grapegrowing conditions vary immensely across the wider Barossa zone and this is reflected in the markedly different wine styles produced here.

The wine region of Australie du Sud

SouthAustralia is one of Australia's six states, located (as the name suggests) in the south of the vast island continent. It's the engine room of the Australian wine industry, responsible for about half of the country's total production each year. But there's more to the region than quantity - countless high-quality wines are produced here, most from the region's signature Grape, Shiraz. These include such fine, collectible wines as Penfolds Grange, Henschke Hill of Grace, Torbreck The Laird and d'Arenberg The Dead Arm.

Australia’s wine industry faces years of oversupply after exports plunge

Exports to China were wiped out in one fell swoop after Beijing imposed a tariff of up to 218%  on Australian wine following a diplomatic row over the Covid-19 pandemic’s origins. At the time, China was Australia’s largest market, accounting for 40% of exports, so that was a hammer blow to producers across the country. The total value of exports then fell by another 10% in the 12 months to June 30, 2023, as inflationary pressures led to reduced demand in Australia’s largest markets, the USA and ...

Fine wine prices rise in 2022 amid ‘warning signs’, says Liv-ex

Fine wine prices have outperformed mainstream equities in 2022, notably led by top Burgundy and Champagne brands, said Liv-ex, a global marketplace for the trade. ‘Fine wine continues to offer relative stability and act as an inflationary hedge,’ said the group, which is considered one of several indicators of market performance. Its benchmark Liv-ex 100 index rose by 7.1% in sterling currency in the first 11 months of 2022, despite dipping in November. The 10 most traded wines by value on Liv-e ...

Bordeaux 2021 en primeur campaign delivered ‘predictable chaos’ and ‘pitiful revenues’

Anecdotal evidence suggests that sales decreased significantly compared to the previous year, with volume and value sales down by as much as 60% in a few cases. In some instances, sales of usually bankable wines crashed to almost zero, according to the merchants that Liv-Ex polled. ‘Yet again, many buyers and collectors have had to ask what purpose the time-consuming event serves when it delivers such pitiful revenue, and who precisely it is for when it offers little compelling value,’ said Liv- ...
