Discover the grape variety: Mérille

Originally from the Tarn-et-Garonne, the merille is a member of the cotoïdes family. It has long occupied the vineyards of Bergerac. It is often planted with négrette N or côt N. Nowadays, it is only grown on a hundred hectares in all. The young leaves of the Merille are heart-shaped. Its bunches are larger than average. The berries are bluish-black in colour and are also large and tightly packed. Merillas are associated with a regular and high production. It is often exposed to attacks by grape worms, leafhoppers and mites. It also fears grey rot but is not very sensitive to powdery mildew and mildew. This variety has 3 approved clones, not yet multiplied, namely 790, 445 and 444. It does not like soils with excessive humidity. It buds early and ripens later. Merille produces a light, not very aromatic, flat and simple wine.

The wine region of Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is one of Canada’s maritime provinces, located halfway between the equator and the North Pole. While the region is not as famous for its wines as Ontario and British Columbia, there is a flourishing wine industry based largely on Sparkling wines and crisp white wines made from Grape varieties such as Vidal, Seyval Blanc, and the province's signature L'Arcadie Blanc variety. Nova Scotia is surrounded by three bodies of water, with the Atlantic Ocean to the South, the Bay of Fundy in the northwest and the Gulf of St Lawrence in the north. If it were an island it would be around the same area as Tasmania and almost the same relative latitude.

The word of the wine: Bordeaux barrel

Barrels of 220 to 225 litres. The toasting of the barrel to bend the staves (curved boards used to make the barrels) can vary according to the coopers and the demand. A gentle and slow toasting has little effect on the aromas. On the other hand, a strong toasting gives aromas of coffee or cocoa which will influence the taste of the wine. A wine barrel has already been aged for a year and has less impact on the wine than a new barrel.
