Italian geographical indication (since 1989) reserved for distillates of marc (skins, pulp, seeds) from the great Tuscan grape varieties: Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot. Distillation in traditional alembics, minimum ageing in oak casks for invecchiate versions. Crystal to golden colour, generous bouquet with intense notes of sour cherry, plum, dried fruit, vanilla, Mediterranean herbs and a woody-spicy touch. ≥40% ABV.
The wine region of Tuscany
Kingdom of Sangiovese: upright reds with cherry, plum, dried herbs and leather, lively acidity and firm tannins. Fleshy, food-friendly Chianti Classico DOCG, deep long-ageing Brunello di Montalcino (spice, tobacco, ripe black fruit), elegant Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. On the coast, Bolgheri crafts the opulent Cabernet- and Merlot-based 'Super Tuscans'. Some fresh white Vernaccia.
The word of the wine: Clone
A vine propagated from a single specimen (by cuttings or grafting), as opposed to mass selection, which starts from a family of vines.
