AVA (1981) in southern Lake County (California), isolated 15 miles north of Calistoga — sixth American AVA: Petite Sirah as signature with clove, cocoa, tobacco and deep blue berries, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Carmenère and Malbec as complements. Rain shadow of the Mayacamas — drier and warmer (Region III) with very cool nights. Sandy loam to shale soils on slopes, clay on the plain. Signature serpentine.
