The wine region of Guenoc Valley

AVA (1981) in southern Lake County (California), isolated 15 miles north of Calistoga — sixth American AVA: Petite Sirah as signature with clove, cocoa, tobacco and deep blue berries, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Carmenère and Malbec as complements. Rain shadow of the Mayacamas — drier and warmer (Region III) with very cool nights. Sandy loam to shale soils on slopes, clay on the plain. Signature serpentine.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Traditional method

Also known as the Champagne method, this is the elaboration of sparkling wines according to the second fermentation method in the bottle.
