Discovering the wine region of Basilicate

Basilicata, in Southern Italy, is a region whose name rarely appears in wine circles. It is best known for its red wines made from the Aglianico grape, and in particular for the Aglianico del Vulture appellation. It has only four DOCs, which collectively cover only two of every 100 bottles produced here. The remaining 98% is sold under IGT or, more likely, Vino da Tavola.

Compared to other Italian wine regions, total wine production in this region is very low: less than 50 million liters. Basilicata may not be a particularly Rich region, but it is rich in natural beauty. Its 10,000 square kilometers (3,860 square miles) of land are bordered to the North by Campania and Puglia and to the south by Calabria. Mostly landlocked, with the Ionian Sea on one side and the Tyrrhenian Sea on the other, it has beautiful mountain ranges and hills.

Is it one for Facebook or Instagram? Should you just try it out on your nearest and dearest, or is there a book in it? A slim volume, or does it need several tomes to expound its profundity? My trade being what it is, and royalties being as modest as they are these days, I’ve rather given up on books. Writing new ones, that ...

Plans to rebuild after wildfire damages rare vines in Crete

Growers in the village of Melambes in Crete saw devastating wildfires cause ‘complete damage to 300 acres (121.4 hectares) of old pre-phylloxera vines’ in July, according to an online crowdfunding page created to support viticulture in the area and help those affected. Although fire burned 90% of the vineyard, it’s hoped some damaged vines can be rescued, said winemaker Iliana Malihin, of her namesake winery and who has spearheaded a community project to revive the site in recent years. Ye ...
