Simple colourful and fruity reds with a light purple colour, smooth tannins, an airy palate with preserved acidity, and understated aromas of red and black fruits. Productive. Now marginal, surviving in a few heritage plots in France and preserved in varietal collections for its genetic interest. The wine region of Knights Valley
Sonoma's easternmost AVA (1983) linking Russian River to Napa at the foot of Mount St. Helena: ultra-dominant Cabernet Sauvignon red king (~2/3 of production) — full, ripe reds with a chocolate dominance, intense black fruits, velvety tannins and Sonoma signature acidity, more elegant than Napa. Volcanic soils, warm climate sheltered from fog by the Coastal Ranges and Mayacamas, tempered by altitude. Flagship producers Peter Michael, Anakota, Vérité.
The wine region of California
Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).
