Discover the grape variety: Regent

A complex interspecific cross between the diana (sylvaner x Müller-Thurgau) and the chambourcin obtained in Germany in 1967 by Gerhardt Alleweldt. It can be found in Quebec (Canada), Belgium and Switzerland, but is little known in France. It should be noted that Regent, a monogenic variety, which is nevertheless resistant to certain cryptogamic diseases, was "bypassed" in 2010 by a less resistant strain of mildew, which was also the case for bianca.

Sarah Jane Evans MW: My top 10 Spanish fine wines of 2021

In a year when travel was almost impossible, wine has been a fine companion. In terms of varieties I have been drinking a vinous A to Z: everything from Albillo (Cebreros) to Zibibbo (Pantelleria, Italy). Specifically I have been enjoying Cariñena from Priorat and Rioja, plus Garnachas – white, red and hairy – from Terra Alta, Rioja and Gredos, as well as Greek Xinomavro from Naoussa and Xarel.lo from Catalunya. Buying wine en primeur: How to approach it

Colin Hay, a professor of political economy with a special interest in the Place de Bordeaux, considers the different ways of approaching en primeur purchasing, ahead of this year’s 2021 campaign. Buying en primeur wines is a rather strange and, arguably, arcane system of buying and selling in which the consumer purchases the wine typically in the early summer following the vintage even though it will not be bottled and delivered for a further 12-18 months. It is, in effect, a futures mark ...

The word of the wine: Ugni blanc

White grape variety of Italian origin, and the main white variety grown in France. Its large bunches give fine, light and lively wines, suitable for distillation: today it is the main variety for making cognac and armagnac. Ugni blanc, which is a little richer in alcohol when grown in Mediterranean regions, is used in the blending of the Provence and Corsica appellations, often in association with other grape varieties that bring aromas and structure, such as clairette, grenache blanc or sauvignon. Ugni blanc is also used, on a secondary basis, in the production of certain white wines in Gironde (AOC Bordeaux, Entre-deux-Mers, etc.).
