Discover the grape variety: Chardonnay
Whites with many faces: mineral and taut at Chablis (lemon, green apple, flint), opulent and buttery at Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet (hazelnut, brioche, yellow fruits), tense and chalky in Champagne (Blanc de Blancs). Also vinified sparkling and widely exported (Sonoma, Margaret River, Casablanca). A Burgundian variety, a cross of Pinot Noir × Gouais Blanc, half-sibling of Aligoté.

The wine region of Cerveteri
Lazio DOC of the Roman coast north-west of Rome (Etruscan Cerveteri), volcanic and sandy terroirs bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea. Trebbiano Toscano (Procanico, ≥50%) and Malvasia are the signature whites — lively and fresh with white flowers, green apple, citrus and a saline-iodine touch, brilliant acidity. Sangiovese and Montepulciano (≥60%) for fleshy reds with red fruits, cherry, plum and a spiced touch. Cesanese as complement.
The wine region of Lazio
Two-millennia Roman vineyard, predominantly white on the volcanic soils of the Castelli Romani. Frascati DOC as figurehead: fresh, accessible whites based on Malvasia and Trebbiano, notes of green apple, white flowers and almond, slightly bitter finish. Also Bellone and Grechetto. Emblematic red: Cesanese del Piglio DOCG, fleshy with notes of ripe cherry, dry herbs and spice, round tannins.
The word of the wine: Table wine
Everything that is not VQPRD (European designation for all appellation wines: quality wine produced in a specific region). In principle, the bottom of the ladder. But, as in Italy a decade ago (Vino da Tavola), this category is also a refuge for wines that are out of the ordinary, whose producers refuse to accept certain grape variety or vinification dictates.
