Discovering the wine region of Vougeot

Vougeot is a small, 88-hectare (217-acre) commune in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits sub-region. The tiny Village, wedged between Vosne-Romanée to the South and Chambolle-Musigny to the North, is dominated by 51 hectares (126 acres) of Grand Cru Vineyard: the iconic Clos de Vougeot. The remainder is given over four Premier Cru sites and a tiny enclave of basic, village-level Vougeot The main site - the Clos de Vougeot vineyard and its attendant château buildings - covers three quarters of vineyard land in the Central and southern portion of the appellation. However, much like Echezeaux nearby, its Size has diluted its reputation and most commentators recommend acquiring wines from known plots within the clos or from well-regarded producers here.

Indeed, the walled vineyard is bordered by basic Bourgogne vineyard on the lower-lying land to the east; by village-level Vosne-Romanée on the adjacent slope to the south; while the slopes above and to the west are covered by the Grand Crus of Grands-Echezeaux (southwest) and Musigny (northwest). The northern segment holds around 12 hectares (30 acres) of the Premier Cru Vougeot climats of Clos de la Perrière, Les Petits Vougeots, Le Clos Blanc/La Vigne Blanche and Les Crâs. While the majority of vines in the commune are Pinot Noir, an unusually high amount of white wines are produced from these vineyards which are planted to roughly one-third Chardonnay, the majority of which is found in Le Clos Blanc (Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris are also permitted in the appellation). The village-level land is also found in the northern, Premier Cru quadrant (and also contains some white vines), falling mostly under the lieu-dit of "Le Village" and dotted, as the name suggests, around the hamlet.

in the northeastern corner of the commune. The 3. 2 hectare (7. 9 acre) village-level vineyard also contains a 1.

The word of the wine: Yeast

Micro-organisms at the base of all fermentative processes. A wide variety of yeasts live and thrive naturally in the vineyard, provided that treatments do not destroy them. Unfortunately, their replacement by laboratory-selected yeasts is often the order of the day and contributes to the standardization of the wine. Yeasts are indeed involved in the development of certain aromas.
