Intensely coloured, fruity reds with a dense purple robe, soft tannins and a generous palate, with aromas of black cherry, blackberry, plum and floral notes. Made as light easy-drinking reds, popular semi-dry cuvées and more structured barrel-aged versions. The second most planted red variety in Germany (Palatinate, Rheinhessen, Württemberg). Cross of helfensteiner × heroldrebe created in 1955 in Weinsberg by August Herold.

The wine region of Finger Lakes

Quality hub of the American northeast, signature Riesling: dry, lively, mineral whites with notes of green apple, lemon, white peach and wet stone, sharp acidity comparable to the best Germans. Also off-dry and sweet botrytised versions. Precise Chardonnay, fine, fresh Pinot Noir (red fruits), peppery Cabernet Franc. Continental climate tempered by 11 glacial lakes (Cayuga, Seneca).

The word of the wine: Bordeaux barrel

Barrels of 220 to 225 litres. The toasting of the barrel to bend the staves (curved boards used to make the barrels) can vary according to the coopers and the demand. A gentle and slow toasting has little effect on the aromas. On the other hand, a strong toasting gives aromas of coffee or cocoa which will influence the taste of the wine. A wine barrel has already been aged for a year and has less impact on the wine than a new barrel.
