The wine region of Kelsey Bench
AVA (2013, 9,100 acres, 900 planted) in Lake County (California) between volcanic mountains and alluvial plain: signature Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel in reds, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc as complements. Vines up to 500 m altitude, mainly north-east facing. Red volcanic soils from ancient pyroclastic flows. Strong day-night temperature swings at altitude — slow ripening, fruit-acid balance signature.
The wine region of California
Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).
The word of the wine: Botrytis cinerea
This fungus, also called noble rot, develops during the over-ripening phase and is an ally of great sweet white wines, when it concentrates the juice of the berries. It requires the humidity of morning fogs and beautiful sunny days, gives musts very rich in sugar and brings to the wines the famous taste of "roasted".
