Colourful, fruity reds with a dense purple robe, supple tannins and fresh acidity. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry, plum, blackcurrant and spicy notes. Round palate, best drunk young. A very early-ripening, cold-hardy interspecific variety (to -25 °C), it drives northern viticulture in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and Poland. German hybrid created in 1964 at Geilweilerhof (Vitis amurensis × Saint-Laurent, descended from Zarya Severa).

The wine region of Southern New South Wales
Southern New South Wales zone (Canberra District, Gundagai, Hilltops, Tumbarumba), high-altitude vineyards (~500 m), warm days and cool nights. Signature Shiraz: elegant and spiced with blackberry, black cherry, pepper, violet and herbaceous hints, fine tannins and refined fruit — an airy alternative to sunny Shiraz. Firm Cabernet Sauvignon and silky Pinot Noir as complements. Tense Riesling, Chardonnay (fine sparkling at Tumbarumba) and Viognier in whites.
