AVA in the high Sierra Foothills of Amador County, California (1983), on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada at 460–760 m, volcanic and granitic well-drained soils, continental climate with warm summers and cool nights. Zinfandel from old vines is the signature red: concentrated ripe red and black fruit, spice, and altitude-driven acidity. Syrah, Barbera and Tempranillo as complements. About 20 % of Amador County wines.
