The wine region of Sebino
Lombardy IGT south of Lake Iseo (Brescia province, immediate neighbour of Franciacorta), glacial morainic hills, stony calcareous soils, temperate climate moderated by the lake. Chardonnay is the signature white — generous and taut with yellow apple, pear, citrus, brioche, hazelnut and mineral notes, often the base for fine sparkling wines. Lively Pinot Bianco and ethereal Pinot Nero as whites. Supple Merlot, firm Cabernet, noble Nebbiolo and vivid Barbera as varietal reds.
The wine region of Lombardia
Three poles. Franciacorta DOCG, Italy's answer to Champagne: elegant brioche traditional-method sparklers (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc), fine bubble and mineral profile. Alpine Valtellina: Nebbiolo (alias Chiavennasca) with fine tannins and red fruits, powerful Sforzato passito. Oltrepò Pavese: fresh Pinot Noir and fruity-sparkling Bonarda.
The word of the wine: Shipping (liquor)
In champagne and wines made according to the traditional method, wine is added before corking to fill the void in the bottle created by disgorging. This added wine is often sweetened by sugar incorporated in variable proportions according to the style of wine sought (see dosage). Syn.: liqueur de dosage.
