Very early table grape with golden, thin-skinned and juicy berries, showing simple fresh aromas of white-fleshed fruit and flowers. Occasionally vinified into simple, lively dry whites for early drinking. Mainly destined for fresh consumption at the start of the season, well suited to northern viticultural climates. The wine region of Mendocino

General AVA of Mendocino County (northern California) with varied micro-climates: signature historic Zinfandel as king red (planted by Italian migrants in the late 19th c. ), notably Redwood Valley and Mendocino Ridge - spicy, peppery reds, ripe and candied black fruits, fleshy tannins. Also fresh, fine Pinot Noir (~2,700 ac) on foggy coastal sectors, Carignan, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache. Warm inland zones for Cabernet and Merlot, an eclectic Italo-Burgundian identity.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: New wine

Wine of the year, fruity and easy to drink. Beaujolais Nouveau is not the only one in this category, the Côtes-du-Rhône, Touraine and Gaillac appellations also produce new wines.
