The wine region of Cole Ranch
America's smallest AVA (1983), under 150 acres, at 1,400–1,600 ft elevation between Russian River and Anderson Valley (Mendocino County, California). Riesling is the standout signature; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir round out the reds. Cooler, wetter mesoclimate means harvest can run a full month later than the rest of Mendocino. A one-mile-by-half-mile valley carved into high hills, planted 1971–1981 by John Cole — fresh acidity is the house signature.
The wine region of California
Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).
The word of the wine: Primeur
Said of wines from the last vintage and, by extension, wines of the year, fruity and easy-drinking, put on sale on the third Thursday in November. The AOC regulations specify that a wine is said to be primeur if it is bottled before the spring, and nouveau if it is bottled before the following harvest. Beaujolais Nouveau is therefore a vin primeur.
