Discovering the wine region of Estrémadure

Extremadura is one of the 17 administrative regions (officially "autonomous communities") of Spain. It is located in the Southwest of the country, on the border with Portugal. It is separated from Andalusia in the south by the Sierra Morena mountains, and from the Central plateau and Castile by the Sierra de Gata range. Extremadura is sparsely populated, but has an abundance of wildlife, such as deer, otters and even lynx.

Its wild black pigs, which feed on acorns, will become the famous "Jamón Ibérico" (Iberian ham). It is not, however, famous for its wine, although viticulture has been going on for centuries. The basic wines produced in the region have not traditionally attracted the attention of greater Spain, let alone the outside world - not least because the local wineries lacked modern technology. However, the DO Ribera del Guadiana title was created in the region in 1999 to bring together six Vino de la Tierra zones and represent the best that Extremadura has to offer.

Argentina harvest report 2022: ‘wines with excellent ageing potential’

The grapes have been picked and Argentina is able to file another successful harvest for 2022, to match the previous four years. However producers are reporting that 2022 was the most singular of recent vintages, with each region experiencing its own challenges. Mendoza ‘The 2021-2022 season reminds me of a good Hollywood movie,’ said Martín Kaiser, viticulturist at Doña Paula in Mendoza. ‘It certainly kept us entertained. Our hearts were in our mouths all the way through, but it had a great end ...

Master Sommelier Larry Stone explains why he sold Lingua Franca to Constellation Brands

Stone will remain on board as a brand ambassador and adviser to the business he created back in 2012. The winemaking team, spearheaded by Thomas Savre and Burgundian consultant Dominique Lafon, is still in place too. ‘We’re all still there and we’re going to keep making great wine, but we will have better resources,’ Stone told Decanter.com. Stone, a Master Sommelier, purchased the 61 hectares Janzen Farm in Oregon’s Willamette Valley on December 31, 2012. He had been working at Evening Land’s a ...

Hitting the right note

Last year, there was much mirth on wine Twitter about a particularly excruciating tasting note. You’re right. The wine trade needs to get out more. But still… this one was a beauty. It began well enough – really quite beautiful, in fact. But before long the imaginative descriptions were getting more ornate and strained. It moved from poetic to meaningless before finishing with a reference to Burnt Norton – the first of TS Eliot’s Four Quartets – that put it firmly in Private Eye magazine’s ...

The word of the wine: Overmaturation

When the grapes reach maturity, the skin becomes permeable and progressively loses water, which causes a concentration phenomenon inside the berry. This is called over-ripening or passerillage.
