Discover the grape variety: Arbane

Arbane or arbanne is a very old white grape variety from the north/east of France, coming from the Aube and more precisely from the Champagne region. The Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins de Champagne wishes to preserve the use of traditional grape varieties of Champagne. The Arbane is a small bunch of grapes with small berries and a very sweet pulp, a late variety that needs sun and heat to concentrate all its sugars. It gives a wine rich in alcohol, elegant and nervous, with a floral nose and a nice acidity.

Different parts of Italy – as well as other areas of Europe – have faced severe storms, heatwaves, wildfires and floods so far in 2023, leading to devastation of infrastructure and loss of life in some cases. In vineyards, extreme weather phenomena have added to winemakers’ concerns around the impact of climate change. Italy’s wine harvest may shrink in 2023, said agriculture group Coldiretti, citing recent storms and intense heat linked to climate change. Extreme weather in Italy: A ...

New Zealand wine producers begin harvest in the wake of cyclone destruction

Last week, Cyclone Gabrielle ripped through the North Island and left a trail of destruction in its wake. Eleven people were killed, dozens more were injured and around 10,000 were left homeless, according to early estimates. Prime minister Chris Hipkins called it the country’s ‘biggest natural disaster’ of the 21st century, and damages are estimated at NZ$13bn (£6.7 bn). Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne are New Zealand’s second and third largest wine producing regions respectively, yielding a combined ...

Stephen Brook: ‘It is astonishing how rapidly changes can take place in the Bordeaux region’

My book The Complete Bordeaux, which has been revised every five years, is soon to be published in its fourth edition. This may seem like excessive haste, given the scope of the book, but it is astonishing how rapidly changes can take place in the region. Burgundy, in contrast, is relatively stable, since most properties are family-owned and tend to stay that way. But not so in Bordeaux, where there are ample opportunities for newcomers to acquire established properties, as they have been doing ...
