Tejo">Alentejo is a well-known, highly respected wine region in eastern Portugal. This hot, Dry area covers approximately a third of the country and is best known for its red wine, the best of which are sold under the and Alentejo DOC (Denominacao de Origem Controlada) title.
Wine from Alentejo is typically made from Aragonez (Tempranillo), Castelao, Trincadeira or a Rich, ripe, jammy blend of the three. Antao Vaz is the white variety of choice here, producing a good level of Acidity and tropical fruit flavors.
Although famously diverse in its portfolio of wine grapes (navigating the many names and their synonyms is a challenge), Alentejo has not been sluggish to adopt such globally popular varieties as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the most remarkable things about modern Alentejo winemaking is its ability to create a uniquely Alentejano wine style from quintessentially French grape varieties.
The region is named for its position South of the Tejo river, which bisects Portugal, entering the ocean near Lisbon. Alentejo extends across about a third of Portugal, with only the Algarve region separating it from the southern coast of the country.
Even the briefest of glances at a population density map of Portugal shows that this area of the country is only very sparsely populated, in stark contrast to the Northern coastal areas around Oporto. Land here is used (somewhat intensively) for the production of various cereal crops, and the cork for which Portugal is so famous. Whereas the cork plantations of the north are quite small, here in Alentejo there is sufficient free space for the thick-barked Quercus suber trees to sprawl out all over the countryside.
The Size of Alentejo means that there is a wealth of Terroir, and it is fairly difficult to generalize about the region as a whole.

From the South Caucasus, perhaps in Georgia, some writings give it as coming from Russia, a country close to the previous one. For a long time, it was grown in greenhouses, particularly in Belgium, but also in England, France, Holland and Japan. It was rarely cultivated in the field, but a few attempts were made without much success on the banks of the Rhine, in the Tarn et Garonne region and in Thomery in the Seine et Marne region. Today, it is no longer multiplied in nurseries and is therefore in danger of extinction. It is thought to be the result of a natural intraspecific cross between white tigvoasa or furjmony feher - a Romanian variety with female flowers - and black kadarka. There is a clone that takes on a very characteristic purple color in the fall, with larger berries, larger bunches and later ripening.
UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt used his Autumn Statement to outline a number of economic measures, but wine trade leaders were still seeking clarity on the government’s position on alcohol duty immediately following the speech. The government’s Autumn Statement document only appeared to refer to projected benefits of last month’s decision to reverse a planned freeze on alcohol duty, as well as benefits of duty reform plans. ‘There is nothing to welcome or comment on following ...
Some Châteauneufs are more reliable than others. When I visit the region to taste the new vintage every year, Domaine de la Janasse’s cuvée Vieilles Vignes regularly features among the best. It’s a particularly dense and concentrated wine when young, and it always strikes me that, even for Châteauneuf, it’s a wine that needs extended ageing to show its best. I was keen to acquire a more complete understanding of how this cuvée develops, so I visited brother-and-sister team Isabelle and Christoph ...
Celebrated Soave producer Pieropan is due to unveil its new winery in April 2022. Dubbed ‘Leonildo Pieropan‘ after the estate’s pioneering late owner, the winery is considered groundbreaking for its eco credentials and use of materials – and is largely hidden under a hill, with just the frontage visible. Pieropan’s project began in 2015, when the family realised they had outgrown the existing winery in the centre of Soave town, and subsequently acquired a site in th ...
A natural compound contained in the skin of the grape, the seed or the woody part of the bunch, the stalk. The maceration of red wines allows the extraction of tannins, which give the texture, the solidity and also the mellowness when the tannins are "ripe". The winemaker seeks above all to extract the tannins from the skin, the ripest and most noble. The tannins of the seed or stalk, which are "greener", especially in average years, give the wine hardness and astringency. The wines of Bordeaux (based on Cabernet and Merlot) are full of tannins, those of Burgundy much less so, with Pinot Noir containing little.
