A light, thirst-quenching style, best drunk young, often by carbonic maceration. Grown in California as "Napa Gamay" and in Languedoc IGPs. An autochthonous south-west variety once ubiquitous in France, now in revival for modern cuvées.

Sierra Foothills AVA (Amador, El Dorado, 1983, 1,000-2,000 ft): signature Zinfandel as ruling red (old vines including Grandpère Vineyard 1866, America's oldest) — full-bodied and concentrated with intense blackberry, black cherry, bramble, spice and earthy notes, old vines adding dried fruits, pepper and leather, high alcohol balanced by acidity. Primitivo and Barbera complement. Mediterranean climate, 30°C diurnal range, weathered granites.

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).
