An interspecific cross between Chancellor - 7053 Seibel - and 6905 Seibel or Subéreux, obtained by the Seyve-Villard company, formerly located in Saint Vallier in the Drôme. As with the white Villard - 12375 Seyve-Villard - these were the two most widely planted direct-producer hybrids. Today, Villard noir is on the verge of extinction, although it is listed in the Official Catalogue of Wine Grape Varieties, list A1.

Neuchatel is one of the smaller wine regions of Switzerland, located in the French-speaking western half of the country, North of the much larger Vaud area. Much like its neighbour, Chasselas dominates white plantings here, however Pinot Noir is more significant here, as is the reputation of Neuchatel's rosés. The region is generally referred to as the 'Three Lakes' as the region - and the four AOCs within it - are found on the relatively low-lying, flatter land, centered around the lakes of Morat, Bienne and Neuchatel. The region also covers three neighbouring Swiss cantons.

Silicon Valley Bank’s (SVB) wine division, now part of First Citizens Bank, recently highlighted winery tasting room trends in its direct-to-consumer report. A ‘standard’ winery tasting in Napa County averaged $81, compared to $38 in Sonoma County and $32 in Oregon, it found, based on 332 winery responses.
