The wine region of Mount Harlan

San Benito County AVA (1990), California, 25 miles east of Monterey Bay, vines at 1,800-2,200 ft: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Burgundian style — vivid red fruits, earthy minerality and high natural acidity. One of California's highest, coolest and driest AVAs — climate close to southern Burgundy, little rain, cool winds. Rare limestone soils in California. Iconic estate Calera, sole commercial producer in the district.

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast).
