Discover the grape variety: Poulsard

Poulsard is a red grape variety that originated in the Franche-Comté region. In 1732, it was qualified as a good grape variety with several others by the parliament of Besançon at the time. It currently covers nearly 300 ha. This variety has 3 approved clones: 296, 584 and 464. Poulsard has slightly hairy branches with long tendrils. Its leaves are yellow in color. Although its bunches are small, its berries are often medium-sized or larger. Poulsard is quite sensitive to scorching, spring frosts and coulure. It is also afraid of oidium, mildew and grey rot. This grape variety appreciates clayey, fat and marly soils. Its fertility is average, so it is preferable to prune it long. It buds quite early. Poulsard produces a wine with a light structure, fine and aromatic. It can be kept for years. This wine goes well with poultry, red meat, cheese and starters.

Bodegas Marqués de Vizhoja experiments with coffee to reduce fungal disease

Galicia is the wettest region in all of Spain with average rainfall starting from 800mm in the driest areas all the way up to 2,200mm for those along the Atlantic coast. Given this concern, fungal issues in the vineyards are quite common and viticulture has been adapted accordingly, for example with vines being trained to pergolas or by higher trellising which allows for good air circulation. In addition, the use of antifungal chemical treatments is widespread to contend with issues such as Esca ...

Vine trunks rise to meet climatic changes

While taller overall vines do exist in regions such as Galicia with their pergola training method, the roots of any vine usually top out at 37cm. It’s at this top point where the Vitis vinifera shoot is grafted in and continues to grow, giving us such grapes as Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay. This is opposed to the rootstocks which are composed of various crosses of vines such as Vitis rupestris which aren’t used for wine production but are resistant to the root louse, phylloxera. This new tal ...

Napa Valley Grapegrowers to receive climate change funding

While vineyards are managed one vintage at a time, farming practices take a longer view. A survey of the Napa Valley Grapegrowers members found that, on average, about 90% wanted more education and resources for water conservation, climate resilience and climate-smart farming opportunities. This grant will go a long way to help provide those resources. ‘Farmers are by nature risk averse,’ said Molly Williams of Napa Valley Grapegrowers. ‘Climate change poses considerable risks. We aren’t plantin ...
