GI in north-western Victoria and NSW (North-West Victoria zone 1996, Murray River alluvial plain downstream of Murray Darling, red-brown loamy sandy calcareous alkaline soils, very hot climate, slightly cooler than Murray Darling). Chardonnay leads in white — full-bodied with ripe stone fruits and vanilla notes. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon as generous reds with dark fruit, with harvest two weeks later than inland thanks to relative coolness.
The wine region of Nouvelle-Galles du Sud
Australia's 2nd wine state with diverse regions. Iconic Hunter Valley: a Sémillon unlike any other, straight, low-alcohol dry whites with vivid citrus when young, evolving over 10-20 years toward honey, toast and lanolin. Medium-bodied Hunter Shiraz, spicy and earthy (leather, red fruits). Also round Chardonnay and aromatic Verdelho.
The word of the wine: Herbaceous
Vegetable odour reminiscent of freshly cut grass and considered a defect of the wine.
