The valley's relationship with Chardonnay is 100 years shorter, but no less significant. It was here that Australia's first Chardonnay was made – from vines planted by the Tyrrell winery of Pokolbin in 1968.

It is most certainly one of the oldest vitis vinifera varieties found mainly in the southwestern part of Bulgaria, and is not known elsewhere - except perhaps in neighbouring Greece and Macedonia - than in this country where it is recognized as endemic.
