Discovering the wine region of Mittelrhein

Mittelrhein is one of Germany's smaller wine regions, with around 468 hectares (1,156 acres) under Vine. A Long, thin region, it follows the course of the Rhine river between Rheinhessen/bingen">Bingen and Bonn, a distance of about 100 kilometers (60 miles) as the crow flies. At its Southern end, the region abuts the western edge of Rheinhessen and northern limits of the Nahe. It also intersects with the Mosel and Ahr regions, where their respective rivers Flow into the Rhine.

The better Vineyard sites are concentrated in the south, around Boppard, Bacharach and Bingen. Some of the scenery here is spectacular, with medieval castles perched on rocky crags overlooking the vineyards and river below. Indeed, the 'Upper Middle Rhine Valley' was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. Mittelrhein wine production is dominated by white wine varieties, most obviously Riesling, which accounts for around 65 percent of vines here.

Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) also feature. The only red-wine grape grown in any quantity here is Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) which accounts for roughly ten percent. Very little Mittelrhein wine is exported, and even on the German domestic market it is not widely known. Unfortunately, the region's dramatic beauty comes at a cost to the wine trade.

France expects bigger 2022 wine harvest but drought is a concern

France’s 2022 wine harvest is likely to be between 42.6 million and 45.6m hectolitres, up by 13% to 21% on the frost-hit 2021 vintage and more in-line with the country’s five-year average. A perfect pairing: Flatbread and cod roe emulsion

My father worked in the wholesale supply of fruit and vegetables. He would often come home with a box of the day’s best produce, and so I became interested in what was in season. Both my parents often worked late, so cooking dinner to help take some weight off them inspired me to want to learn more. My first kitchen job at age 14 was at a Greek restaurant in Southampton, and it inspired my love for foods of the eastern Mediterranean. Today, I’m lucky to be able to obtain the best produce from ‘O ...

Vanilla was ranked as the most pleasant smell in a study involving 235 people and conducted by an international network of researchers, including those from the University of Oxford and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. This was closely followed by ethyl butyrate, ‘which smells like peaches’, said the researchers, who published their findings in the Current Biology journal. Vanilla notes can be found in several wine styles, such as some iterations of Chardonnay or Rioja, largely resulting from ...
