The wine region of Cova da Beira
DOC in west-central Portugal (coastal, between Aveiro and Coimbra, uniquely compact calcareous-clay soils). Baga native grape (>45% of vineyard) reigns in red: intense black cherries, blackberries, earth, eucalyptus, spices and firm tannins evolving to silkiness after 10-15 years. Chardonnay and Bical in precise, refined whites. Elegant traditional-method sparkling wines.
The wine region of Beiras
Vast region of north-central Portugal, a fragmented mosaic of distinct sub-regions. In the west, Bairrada makes dense Baga reds with notes of black cherry, blackberry and leather, firm tannins — the base of the great Portuguese sparkling wines. In the centre, Dao produces fine Touriga Nacional reds (violet, raspberry, spice) and elegant Encruzado whites (flowers, citrus, butter). To the continental east, fleshy Touriga of Beira Interior and aromatic Fernao Pires.
The word of the wine: Flint (smell of)
Mineral odour reminiscent of flint and flint heated during sharpening.
