Firm, upright reds with precise acidity and angular tannins, showing aromas of sour cherry, plum, dried herbs, leather, black tea and balsamic notes. Characteristically bitter, savoury finish. Star of Chianti Classico DOCG, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG and Morellino di Scansano. Italy's most planted variety, a descendant of Ciliegiolo × Calabrese di Montenuovo.
Ligurian DOC of the Levant (La Spezia, neighbour of Cinque Terre), steep schist terroirs facing the sea. Vermentino (40–75%) as the signature white: crisp and sunny with intense notes of citrus, white flowers, Mediterranean herbs and a superb saline-iodine touch, vibrant acidity ideal with seafood. Native Albarola and Bosco as complements. Sangiovese (≥40%) and Ciliegiolo as the signature reds: red fruits, garrigue and a peppery touch.
