Discovering the wine region of Coteaux d'Ancenis

The Coteaux d'Ancenis is a small wine region located around the town of Ancenis, halfway between Nantes and Angers, in the western Part of the Loire Valley. The wines can be red, rosé or white. The red and rosé wines are made mainly from Gamay (although up to 10% Cabernet Franc is allowed). Pinot Gris is the only grape variety allowed for white wines.

The region also has a tradition of producing a Sweet, late-harvested Pinot Gris, known locally - and often labelled - as "Malvoisie" (wine producers in western Switzerland - Vaud and Valais, in particular - have a similar naming convention). The portfolio of wines associated with Coteaux d'Ancenis is thus somewhat broader than that of its neighbouring appellations, Muscadet and Gros Plant du Pays Nantais. These two appellations produce only white wines and have only one authorized grape variety. Coteaux d'Ancenis wines are generally single-varietal (although there is some Cabernet Franc in the reds), and are often labeled as such.
