Discovering the wine region of Ferguson Valley

Ferguson Valley is an emerging Australian wine district within the official Geographe wine region of Western Australia. Located just inland from the Indian Ocean coast, this sunny valley is cooled and moistened by sea breezes during hot summer afternoons, allowing it to produce Powerful wines of unusual complexity. Located immediately North of the Blackwood Valley and the famous Margaret River, the land is surrounded by some of the most established vineyards in Western Australia. That said, 'established' here only means 30 or 40 years, as the region's wine-making potential was only really recognised in the 1970s.

Today there are about a dozen boutique wineries, many with Tasting rooms and/or restaurants. Due to the lack of exposure to the cool waters of the Southern (Antarctic) Ocean, Geographe's Climate as a whole is Slightly warmer than that of its famous neighbour, Margaret River, although the hills around the Ferguson Valley - and a slight increase in elevation - provide some relief to the vineyards from the intense summer afternoon sun. Willow Bridge Winery is the region's largest and best-known producer, located a Short distance from the northern banks of the Collie River. Although a newcomer to the area, the winery now has approximately 60 hectares (150 acres) of vineyards.

In the past, winemakers simply took cuttings from their vineyards, propagated them, and planted them in the ground. But phylloxera put a stop to that. What was a simple process acquired layers of complexity: winemakers ...
