Grand Cru in the Bas-Rhin (~30 ha, 210–265 m, south-east aspect, gypsiferous Keuper marl with dolomitic pebbles that promote warm drainage). Riesling is the white king: ample, dense and powerful with massive structured acidity typical of gypsum, long saline and tannic finish. Gewurztraminer complements it; together they cover 95% of the vineyard. The 2001 charter limits residual sugar to 9 g/l—dry by definition.
The wine region of Alsace
Capital of great French aromatic whites, most often dry and single-varietal. Straight, mineral Riesling (lemon, gunflint), opulent, exuberant Gewurztraminer (lychee, rose, spices), round, smoky Pinot Gris, floral, crisp Muscat, supple Pinot Blanc. Fine, fruity Crémants d'Alsace, exceptional sweet Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles. 15,500 ha at the foot of the Vosges on varied soils, 51 Grands Crus since 1975.
