Discovering the wine region of Alentejano

Tejo">Alentejo is a well-known, highly respected wine region in eastern Portugal. This hot, Dry area covers approximately a third of the country and is best known for its red wine, the best of which are sold under the and Alentejo DOC (Denominacao de Origem Controlada) title. Wine from Alentejo is typically made from Aragonez (Tempranillo), Castelao, Trincadeira or a Rich, ripe, jammy blend of the three. Antao Vaz is the white variety of choice here, producing a good level of Acidity and tropical fruit flavors.

Although famously diverse in its portfolio of wine grapes (navigating the many names and their synonyms is a challenge), Alentejo has not been sluggish to adopt such globally popular varieties as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the most remarkable things about modern Alentejo winemaking is its ability to create a uniquely Alentejano wine style from quintessentially French grape varieties. The region is named for its position South of the Tejo river, which bisects Portugal, entering the ocean near Lisbon. Alentejo extends across about a third of Portugal, with only the Algarve region separating it from the southern coast of the country.

Even the briefest of glances at a population density map of Portugal shows that this area of the country is only very sparsely populated, in stark contrast to the Northern coastal areas around Oporto. Land here is used (somewhat intensively) for the production of various cereal crops, and the cork for which Portugal is so famous. Whereas the cork plantations of the north are quite small, here in Alentejo there is sufficient free space for the thick-barked Quercus suber trees to sprawl out all over the countryside. The Size of Alentejo means that there is a wealth of Terroir, and it is fairly difficult to generalize about the region as a whole.

Discover the grape variety: Négret Canourgue

Originating very certainly from the high valley of the Tarn aveyronnaise and lozérienne. It was confused for a long time with Abouriou, and as a result it still exchanges, wrongly, a few synonyms. It is very little multiplied, almost unknown in the other French wine regions.

Discover the grape variety: Gouget noir

This grape variety was cultivated in the Montluçonnaise region (Allier) since the origin of the vineyards in this region. For a long time it was confused with Gougean de l'Allier, but genetic analyses show that it comes from a mutation of Gouais blanc, also called Gouget blanc. Gouget noir is practically on the verge of extinction, although it is listed in the Official Catalogue of Wine Grape Varieties, list A1. It was therefore very well known in the wine-growing centre of France but totally absent from other French regions and abroad.

Decanter guide to picnicking for wine lovers

According to lifestyle and happiness guru Gretchen Rubin, you ‘bring your own weather to a picnic’. Ms Rubin, I’d suggest, has never shivered under a tree watching raindrops turn her fish-paste sandwich to mush because the weather forecast was wrong. There are, it’s safe to say, picnics and Picnics. It’s a term that takes in everything from a rubber baguette in a French ‘Aire’ off the Autoroute du Soleil to a four-course spread while listening to opera at Glyndebourne. What’s definitely true is ...

Southern Rhône 2021: full report and top-scoring wines

Southern Rhône 2021 overall vintage rating: 2/5 Fresh, bright, intense white wines throughout the region. A hard frost reduced yields and produced a fragile harvest for reds. Quality is mixed; many wines lack ripeness, but there are some very good wines in a lean, fresh style with relatively low alcohols. ‘In this chaotic, unpredictable and atypical vintage, buying by appellation, or even producer, isn’t a reliable strategy.’ Southern Rhône 2021 red wine of the vintage Château de Beaucastel, Hom ...

The word of the wine: Consistency

In tasting, it is the equivalent of chewing (the chewiness of a tannic red wine is also mentioned). We then speak of firmness, fluidity, softness, hardness, and why not the crunchiness of an early wine by reference to the grape.
