Ukrainian wine, hanging in the balance

Since February 24th 2022 the world has quickly learned a great deal more about Europe’s second-largest country, Ukraine. Most notably will be our profound admiration for the Ukrainians’ continued resistance to the invading Russian Army. This is but one item on a long list that includes such things as Ukraine being one of the world’s top exporters of wheat, barley and sunflower seeds. Master Sommelier Larry Stone explains why he sold Lingua Franca to Constellation Brands

Stone will remain on board as a brand ambassador and adviser to the business he created back in 2012. Andrew Jefford: ‘A wine’s visual cues shout, stamp, whistle and roar’

Disconcerting: I couldn’t forget this bottle for days afterwards. Still can’t. Back in August, wine critic Lin Liu MW (together with her partner Philippe Lejeune of Château de Chambert in Cahors) came to dinner, en route to a short holiday in Provence. It came in a slope-shouldered bottle, not a classic Bordeaux bottle. We tried it with some R ...

The word of the wine: Shipping (liquor)

In champagne and wines made according to the traditional method, wine is added before corking to fill the void in the bottle created by disgorging. This added wine is often sweetened by sugar incorporated in variable proportions according to the style of wine sought (see dosage). Syn.: liqueur de dosage.
